The local government of Tanay, Rizal won three honors in the 12th Atop-DOT Pearl Awards during the 18th Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) National Convention held Oct. 4-7 at the Iloilo Convention Center.
Tanay emerged as the 2017 Grand Winner for Best Tourism Oriented LGU-Municipality category.
Dr Jeffrey Pino, Municipal Tourism Officer and 2015 Most Outstanding Tourism Officer of the Philippines, received the award with councilors Raffy Reyes, Allan Sacramento and Luis Catolos.
The municipality likewise bagged the First Runner Up honors in the Best Tourism Event (Sports) category for its Tanay Rodeo event, which is held annually in observance of its Fiesta celebrations.
Additionally, the LGU was cited for its Best Practices on Community Based Responsible Tourism – Community-based Tourism Enterprise and/or Service courtesy of the Tourguide and Recreation Association (TARA) Inc.
Tanay, a first-class municipality with 19 barangays, boasts of lush mountains, pristine rivers and waterfalls, and pilgrimage sites frequented by thousands of domestic and international visitors.
It is home to the famed Daranak and Batlag Falls, Regina RICA, Mt. Batolusong, Mt. Maynuba, Mt. Cayabu, Mt. Sapari, Mt. Ngusong Kabayo, Mt. Daraitan, Tinipak River and underground cave.
The municipal government is known for its inclusive, participatory, and holistic approach to tourism, characterized by empowering Indigenous Peoples and locals by training them to serve as guides with knowledge not only of local history and customs, but also of basic life support and first aid.
